Ahead of Earth Day 2021, hundreds of companies are asking President Biden to add to the U.S. pledge of the Paris climate accord by cutting U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 percent.
The letter was signed by more than 300 investors and businesses, including dozens of retailers such as Walmart, Levi Strauss & Co. and Tiffany & Co. The signees argue this new pledge would “restore the standing of the U.S. as a global leader” by addressing climate change in an aggressive manner.

The group says reducing U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 percent below 2005 levels by 2030 will bring multiple benefits: A thriving economy, millions of jobs and a robust recovery from the pandemic.
The White House is hosting a virtual international climate summit April 22-23, where 40 world leaders will convene to discuss the worldwide impacts of the climate crisis. The Biden administration is expected to use this opportunity to announce a new target for emissions reduction. The summit will be live streamed for public viewing.
