Retailers seeing soaring demand for fundamental goods are calling for assistance to meet these rising demands. The Kroger Co. wants to hire an additional 10,000 employees as demand for food surges. The company announced it would provide a one-time bonus amounting to $300 for every full-time associate and $150 for every part-time associate. They have also extended paid leave for those experiencing symptoms of COVID-19. Up to 14 days of paid time off is available for associates who must go on leave.
"We believe that by expanding our emergency leave guidelines, more of our associates can feel certain knowing that if their health is affected by or if they experience symptoms of COVID-19, they will be supported while they stay at home and recover," said Tim Massa, Kroger's senior vice president and chief people officer.
7-Eleven expects to hire 20,000 employees, anticipating a surge in mobile orders through its delivery app. Employees will fulfill app orders for essential items like food, beverage and over-the-counter medications. Amazon will hire an additional 100,000 warehouse employees, increasing hourly pay by $2 through April.
Target is raising wages by $2 until at least May 2. Team members who are pregnant, age 65 and older or who have underlying medical conditions may access up to 30 days of paid leave. Bonuses ranging from $250-$1,500 will be paid to 20,000 hourly store team leads.
“Increasing their compensation for a job incredibly well done and ensuring continued compensation for those who need to care for themselves and their families is a reflection of our company’s values and simply the right thing to do,” said Target CEO Brian Cornell.
CVS plans to hire 50,000 workers across the country and will award bonuses ranging from $150 to $500 for essential employees. Its hiring strategy includes virtual job fairs and virtual interviews. Dollar General plans to nearly double its hiring rate, adding an additional 50,000 team members to its stores.
Papa John’s is expediting its plans to hire 20,000 restaurant team members — applicants can interview and start the same day.
“For anyone looking for immediate ways to earn an income, we’re making it quick and simple to apply, interview and be hired at Papa John’s,” said Marvin Boakye, Papa John’s chief people and diversity officer.
Grocery delivery company Instacart plans to add 300,000 workers to serve as "full-service shoppers" to deliver food locally. PepsiCo announced it will hire 6,000 full-time and full-benefit employees. Employees diagnosed with COVID-19 will receive up to 14 days of paid sick leave.
Walmart plans to hire 150,000 additional staff and has pledged $550 million in staff bonuses to its ecommerce warehouse and hourly staff, which includes an increase in hourly pay of $2. Through expedited hiring, an individual can apply online and be hired in as little as 24 hours.
