The National Retail Federation’s annual Top 100 Retailers list ranks retailers based on U.S. sales. Walmart remains in the leading spot, followed by Amazon, Costco, Kroger and The Home Depot. This series takes a look at power players in select retail categories.
Among the top supermarket Power Players – The Kroger Co. (No. 4), Albertsons Companies (No. 10), Royal Ahold Delhaize USA (Stop & Shop, Giant Food, etc., at No. 12), and Publix Super Markets (No. 13) – everyone saw U.S. sales growth of at least 6%.

Supply chain issues were severe in 2021, with challenges continuing into 2022 alongside the impact of inflation on core categories, including food. However, real gains in wages as well as continued access to savings helped consumers weather many of the challenges posed by inflation.
Growth is relatively absent, however, in new grocery stores; grocery is still a market where money is made in existing infrastructure. “They will do remodels, and you’ve seen a lot of that,” says David Marcotte, senior vice president for Kantar. “Some of that has helped sales, as well.”
