“Retailers and consumers are feeling good about the state of the U.S. economy, and a big part of that is the result of lawmakers who have made economic growth and job creation a top priority."
Matthew Shay
NRF President and CEO
WASHINGTON — The National Retail Federation today honored a bipartisan group of lawmakers for their support of public policy priorities important to the retail industry and its millions of small businesses. House Education and Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., was named NRF’s Legislator of the Year, and 216 members of the House and 51 members of the Senate were recognized as “Heroes of Main Street.” The awards will be presented this week during the Retail Advocates Summit, NRF’s congressional fly-in.
“Chairwoman Foxx has been a steadfast advocate for commonsense regulatory policies that allow businesses large and small to grow and create jobs in their communities,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “As a passionate champion for workforce development, she has advanced a number of initiatives to empower more students and workers to gain the skills they need to achieve a promising lifelong career.”
“Retailers and consumers are feeling good about the state of the U.S. economy, and a big part of that is the result of lawmakers who have made economic growth and job creation a top priority,” Shay said. “As Heroes of Main Street, these elected officials truly understand that the decisions they make here in Washington have a real impact on local businesses and communities across the country.”
The overwhelming majority of retailers are small businesses, with more than 98 percent of all retail companies employing fewer than 50 people.
The Hero of Main Street award was created by NRF in 2013, and eligibility is based on key votes, bill sponsorship and advocacy to advance retailers’ priorities. Recipients have supported policies that recognize the contributions of the retail industry, and have worked to encourage a “vibrant, sustained and healthy” retail sector.

Foxx, who represents North Carolina’s 5th Congressional District, was selected as Legislator of the Year by NRF’s Policy Council because of her support for regulatory relief, workforce development and pro-growth tax reform.
