NRF has received the prestigious Reed Award for Best Lobby Day in recognition of Fight Retail Crime Day 2023. Presented by Campaigns & Elections magazine, the Reeds recognize excellence in political campaigning, campaign management, political consulting and political design, grassroots and advocacy. The award was announced at the Reed Awards ceremony in Charleston, S.C., on March 21.

NRF named Oct. 26, 2023, as Fight Retail Crime Day to raise awareness of the urgent need for Congress to act on rising retail crime. The event brought together retailers and industry partners in Washington, D.C., to advocate for federal solutions to fight retail crime and rallied retail associates to participate in grassroots calls to action.

NRF also hosted the first Fight Retail Crime Day Fly-in, which convened 70 retail asset protection executives representing nearly 30 retail brands to engage with Congress and advocate for S. 140/H.R. 895, the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act, which aims to enhance federal coordination in combating retail crime. Participants met directly with lawmakers in 65 meetings with congressional offices, resulting in 36 new sponsors of CORCA since Fight Retail Crime Day, bringing the total to over 100 sponsors overall.

The highlight of the lobby day was a live press conference and rally at the front of the U.S. Capitol Building where three U.S. senators and five members of the House of Representatives called on Congress to act. The press conference garnered attention from 20 media outlets and generated more than 325 media mentions, including from Politico, CNBC, Loss Prevention Magazine and Women’s Wear Daily.

Nearly 90 members of Congress were recognized as Retail Crime Fighters for their support of CORCA. After being recognized as Retail Crime Fighters, more than 30 members of Congress expressed their commitment to fighting retail crime by displaying NRF’s digital badge on their social media accounts and conducting media interviews.

For those not able to be in D.C., NRF provided engagement opportunities to retailers and our network of grassroots advocates through grassroots calls to action. In a single day, advocates sent more than 6,400 messages to Congress urging them to act.

While Fight Retail Crime Day resulted in great momentum in NRF’s push toward passage of CORCA, our work is not over. Make your voice heard and call on Congress today to pass this legislation.
